Why Is Vacuuming Important During Aircond Installation?

Updated: 24 September 2026

Vacuuming is one of the most important steps in a new air conditioner installation, but it happens inside the copper piping where customers cannot see it. Before the refrigerant is released from the outdoor unit, a technician should use a proper vacuum pump to remove air, moisture and other non-condensable gases from the refrigerant circuit.

What Does “Vacuuming an Aircond” Mean?

During installation, the indoor unit and copper piping initially contain normal atmospheric air. That air also carries water vapour. After all flare connections are completed and the system passes its leak or pressure checks, the technician connects a vacuum pump to the service port.

The pump lowers the pressure inside the sealed refrigerant circuit. Under deep vacuum, moisture changes into vapour more easily and can be drawn out together with the trapped air. Only after evacuation is completed and the vacuum remains stable should the refrigerant service valves be opened according to the manufacturer’s installation procedure.

Connect piping → Leak/pressure check → Vacuum and hold test → Release refrigerant → Test operation

Five Reasons Proper Vacuuming Is Important

1. It removes moisture from the refrigerant circuit

Malaysia’s humid climate makes moisture control especially important. Even when copper pipes look dry, water vapour may remain inside. If moisture is left in the system, it can react with refrigerant and compressor oil, contribute to acidic contamination and damage internal components over time.

2. It removes trapped air and non-condensable gases

An air conditioner is designed to circulate the specified refrigerant, not a mixture of refrigerant and atmospheric air. Trapped air does not condense normally inside the system. It can cause abnormal operating pressure, higher compressor temperature, unstable performance and unnecessary energy consumption.

3. It protects the compressor and oil

The compressor is one of the most expensive components in an air conditioner. Moisture, acid and contamination can reduce lubrication quality and damage motor windings or internal moving parts. Proper evacuation helps keep the sealed refrigerant system clean from the beginning.

4. It supports correct cooling performance

When the circuit contains only the correct refrigerant charge, heat can be absorbed and rejected as designed. Poor evacuation may contribute to weak cooling, longer running time, abnormal pressure and inconsistent temperature. Vacuuming cannot correct wrong horsepower selection or poor airflow, but it is essential for the refrigeration circuit to operate correctly.

5. It helps verify that the circuit remains sealed

After the target vacuum is reached, the technician should isolate the pump and observe whether the vacuum holds. A rapid pressure rise may indicate a leak, a loose connection, moisture still boiling off or a problem with the service setup. However, a vacuum hold test is not a complete replacement for a proper nitrogen pressure test.

What Can Happen If the Installer Skips Vacuuming?

Contamination left inside Possible effect
Moisture Ice restriction, oil contamination, acid formation and internal corrosion
Air Higher operating pressure, extra compressor load and reduced efficiency
Dirt or residue Restriction, abnormal wear and possible damage to sensitive components

These problems may not appear immediately. An air conditioner can seem cold on the first day and still develop reliability or efficiency problems later. This is why installation quality matters as much as the model selected.

Vacuuming and Pressure Testing Are Different

Procedure Main purpose What it does not prove alone
Nitrogen pressure test Checks piping and joints for leakage under positive pressure Does not remove moisture or air
Vacuum evacuation Removes air and moisture before refrigerant is released Does not replace the full pressure-test procedure

How Long Should Aircond Vacuuming Take?

There is no responsible universal answer such as “10 minutes is enough.” Evacuation time depends on pipe length and diameter, system size, outdoor humidity, pump condition, hose setup and whether the circuit contains moisture. A larger VRV/VRF system requires a different procedure from a short residential split-unit installation.

A professional technician should follow the air conditioner manufacturer’s procedure and confirm vacuum quality with appropriate instruments. The result matters more than simply running the pump for a fixed number of minutes.

Is Purging with Refrigerant the Same as Vacuuming?

No. Briefly releasing refrigerant to push air out of the copper pipe is not a proper substitute for evacuation. Purging may leave moisture and air inside, wastes refrigerant and releases refrigerant unnecessarily. A dedicated vacuum pump should be used according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

What Should Customers Check During Installation?

  • Ask whether the installer will use a proper vacuum pump before releasing refrigerant.
  • Confirm that flare joints and piping are checked for leakage.
  • Make sure the installer does not use the outdoor unit’s refrigerant as a substitute for vacuuming.
  • Request a test run after installation to check cooling, drainage, operating current and abnormal noise.
  • For long piping or VRV/VRF work, use trained technicians who follow the correct pressure-test, evacuation and additional-refrigerant procedures.
Important: Vacuum work involves a sealed refrigeration circuit and should be performed by trained air-conditioning technicians. Do not open service valves or handle refrigerant without the correct tools and knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is vacuuming necessary for every new split aircond installation?

Yes. Newly connected indoor coils and copper pipes contain air and moisture. They should be evacuated with a vacuum pump before the outdoor unit’s refrigerant is released, following the manufacturer’s procedure.

Can an aircond still cool if vacuuming was skipped?

It may initially produce cold air, but trapped air or moisture can cause abnormal pressure, reduced efficiency, unstable performance and long-term reliability problems. Initial cooling does not prove the installation was completed correctly.

Does vacuuming check for refrigerant leaks?

A vacuum hold test can reveal that a system is not maintaining vacuum, but it does not replace a proper nitrogen pressure test. Good installation practice uses the appropriate leak-testing and evacuation procedures.

Does a longer copper pipe need a longer vacuum?

Often, a larger internal volume takes longer to evacuate, but time also depends on moisture, pump capacity, hose configuration and system size. The technician should confirm the achieved vacuum instead of relying only on time.

Is vacuuming required when relocating an old aircond?

Yes. Once the refrigerant circuit is opened and the unit is reconnected, the piping should be properly leak-tested and evacuated before operation. The technician should also assess whether the old piping and refrigerant can be reused safely.
